In this talk, Sam Harris believes that we should NOT take on the label of "Atheists". Taking it further he suggests we should not take on any other labels such as free thinker, secular humanists, brights or what have you. Are his points valid? He puts forth a reasoned and reasonable argument. I'd be interested to hear any opinions from other atheists here. He starts speaking 4 minutes into the video.

I'm way ahead of him, it's far too broad a concept. You don't see theists calling themselves theists very often, usually they are biblical scholar types.

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

Not to quash this one, but we've had this discussion a few times, I think.

Thanks for posting this. I watched it again. I didn't remember how much of it was about ideas like meditation. It seems that he's saying that if we call ourselves atheists, then that's all we'll allow ourselves to be. I still don't buy it, but much of what he said is still worth thinking about.

". . . [I]ntellectual honesty will always be more durable, and deeper and easier spread than atheism."

Meh. I'm a skeptic, an agnostic/atheist, a freethinker, a humanist and so on. "You can call me Ray, or you can call me Dave..." Whatever.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

I guess it was before my time or I missed it somehow. I'll read up on them as I'm interested on other Atheists take or previous discussions here. While I haven't viewed them yet, I will. Many thanks for taking the time for the links Gorgo, I'm glad I brought the topic up, again.

I personally don't disagree with your attitude but to a theist an Atheist is worse than a Nazi. Nazi's can get to heaven, Atheists won't. I might be moving to Texas and Texas is a theist nation inside a theist nation and therein lies my interest.

If you can travel that far, make sure you check in with the Atheist Community of Austin. ACA is affiliated with
Atheist Alliance, American Atheists, American Humanists Association, the Council for Secular Humanism, and the Austin Coalition of Reason. They produce The Atheist Experience TV show, which changes minds by using words like Atheism.

OH! Without a doubt. I have a sister that lives in San Antonio about 1.5 hrs. away, to the south. I really wanted to do so this last trip but was unable to schedule it in. I've watched quite a few Atheist Experience TV show's on youtube and am a fan of Matt Dillahunty. I don't know how widely known it is but he was raised as a fundamentalist and read the Bible through completely several times (by his word's) so he knows his Bible way better than most theists and a big amount of the material that proves that Christianity is based on bullshit through the Bibles own contradictions and but what it says directly. The link I provided has a important second part here, the call does not end on the first link. Sadly he had to abruptly end the call because they were out of time and he wanted to make his point before they ran out of time. With the show taking place in the public access studios in Austin they cannot go over their allocated time slot at all. When that occurs some people (theist) thinks he does so intently but it's not the case. Thanks for bringing that up also Gorgo.
