FYI, I see that one of the arch-angels in the pantheon of young-Earth creationism, Duane Gish, passed away on March 5. While I don't much like the idea of "celebrating" anyone's death, it's hard to avoid the obvious conclusion that Gish certainly did much harm in the area of science education, and at least in that narrow sense, the farther he is from it (and now he is as far as it gets), the better.

The point of philosophy is to start with something so simple as not to seem worth stating, and to end with something so paradoxical that no one will believe it. -- Bertrand Russell

I never cheer when the monster dies. There is always a more subtle one waiting in the wings.

At least Gish was out in the open where he could be countered effectively.

Countered mostly in writing. His style of debate, the "Gish Gallup," made live debates a joke. He would throw out so much baloney that a live debater couldn't rebut most of it. Kent Hovind used that style too as did many of the leading creationists. It was because of that style of debating that many people like Richard Dawkins decided that live debates with them were a waste of time.

Anyhow, back in the late nineties, some SFN members and I visited the ICR museum in San Diego. It was there that I met Duan Gish:

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

To paraphrase Christopher Hitchens (as he remarked of Jerry Falwell's demise), "If given an enema, he could be buried in a matchbox."

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

Similar yet more poetic than I was thinking, thanks.

I found some examples of how dishonest Gish was. Mind you, it has been theorized by someone who spent some time with him, that Gish was deluding himself as well.
