So I got a new toy for Father's Day. Apparently I've been out of the loop for quite some time, because I just recently found out about this Italian company who makes "open-source" hardware.

Arduino - HomePage

It's a lot of fun so far! You can USB this thing into your computer, dump some quick code (basically C) into it and it'll do whatever you tell it (within reason, of course).

I am going to use mine to finish the robot my kids and I have been working on (after I'm done playing with it, of course).

Anybody else played with these before? There's quite an online community for hobbyists out there....

I've wanted to play with those things for a couple years now, but just don't have the time.

I don't write code but yes these things have been out there for some time. If I wasn't so lazy I would love to be able to write code for hardware like this. There are lots of things one could do which a little imagination could dream up. Being out of the loop, are you familiar with world of "makezine"? They have all kind of projects using Arduino. It's a cool place for creative tech'y minds. There are even Maker Faire or Conventions about the world but I digress from the immense world that surrounds the arduino.

There are open source IDEs you can use that don't require much skill at coding. These guys seem to have put a lot of work into making this stuff accessible.

I have only recently found out about Make. My son found some books that show Lego/Arduino projects that he wants me to help him build. I can't wait until he's old enough to be actually helpful!

Ah, memories of my hardware hacker days where I designed and build circuit boards and stuffs. I'd find it too frustrating nowadays, especially with my failing eyesight.

You lucky dog. I'm sure you can make him believe he's being a big part of the project until he passes you up. These years go by fast, don't you know.
I did take a class in PL-1 programming in the 70's that I got an 'A' in that I loved taking but I ended up getting into hardware vs software. A major career blunder because software is still dominant where hardware is basically "disposable" now, due to Moores's law effects on cost vs complexity. I'll have to look into that "open source IDEs " you teased me with (thanks).

It's not your eye's that are the cause, although they probably are failing, it's the reduction in geometry. 25 years ago you used microscopes to find solder shorts. Today you swap out the whole circuit board.
