Ashley Paramore was sexually assaulted at TAM 2012. While the lessons in her video are important (and the usual nonsense happens in the comments), I just wanted to point out, to anyone who thinks there's a dedicated corps of JREF/TAM-haters:- Jen McCreight: "And I also have to thank the JREF for handling her situation well."
- PZ Myers: "...when the JREF do right by a victim, give them credit."
- Stephanie Zvan: "...things were handled well when she reported the assault."

| I saw the video yesterday and considered posting it here. But I figured you would see what was being said about it, and present a more complete picture, being that you are a regular reader of the FtBlogs. She did the right thing by going to the consultants and I'm glad her experience with them was a good one.
As I said in my TAM thread, the harassment policy was back in the registration materials, which was missing last year. A good thing. I wonder who guided her to the consultants? I have to believe it was staff, because staff knew what to do. And even without the policy in the packet, the logical thing to do is to go to staff, as I mentioned last year in one of these threads.
She also made the point that DJ seems to be listening. That was evident in the meeting we had (staff) on the subject of harassment policy.
Bummer for her for having been assaulted. I wish there were a way to scan for creeps, but there isn't. I'm glad she chose to come back to TAM.
I was dismayed by the comments too. But I think what's important is that a policy does exist, and at least for her, it worked. I understand her reasons for not speaking out earlier, although I wish she had. But I totally get her reluctance to. You can see it in several of the comments.
There are people who think TAM condones bad behaviour and does nothing about it. PZ had to straighten one of them out. The reaction of the FtBlogers themselves to the video was good. |
Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

If a group one likes does something one doesn't think is right, a Wise Person™ will constructively criticize the group in the hopes that the group does better in the future. If the group ignores/dismisses valid criticism and appears to continue to do things badly, or attempts to address the problem in weird/wrong ways, the Wise Person might eventually throw up their hands and not bother trying any more. But if the group later does something right, the Wise Person will offer commensurate praise, because maybe where criticism didn't work, positive feedback will.
In that respect (only), all the bloggers I read are Wise People. None of the FtBloggers (or Skepchicks) want TAM/JREF/Grothe to fail. |

Nice to see that the skeptical community is moving to deal with such things. |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
