That religious habit of accusing atheists of having no basis for morality is now starting to have their intended effect:
see here.
In a bench conference during Louisville Metro Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin’s fiery misconduct trial, her lawyer said the prosecutor couldn’t be trusted to tell the truth because he “does not believe in God” or in “heaven or hell.”
"What guides him morally?" defense lawyer Aubrey William, who is an ordained minister, asked about attorney David Tachau. "What compels him to tell the truth?
"He will say anything," Williams said, according to a transcript of the bench conference Wednesday before Council Court Chairman Jim King that was obtained by The Courier-Journal. |
What gets me? The creationists and presuppers will likely use this as an example of how untrustworthy non-xians are.

Didn't the atheist bring up some statistics about how religious people are less moral and less intelligent? I'm sure that would go down well with the judge and jury, hahaha. |

On the contrary: It was only Williams behavior whose conduct pissed off the judge:
O’Connell, who previously served as a district and circuit judge, said Williams showed a "lack of respect" for opposing counsel that "I have never witnessed in my career both on and off the bench." |
He never said anything about the other lawyer, did he?

If one looks at a close analogy, perhaps the offensiveness of what the defense attorney said would be even more apparent.
What if the story had read like this:
In a bench conference during Louisville Metro Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin’s fiery misconduct trial, her lawyer said the prosecutor couldn’t be trusted to tell the truth because he “does not believe in Ahura Mazda” or in “Asha or Chaos.”
“What guides him morally?” defense lawyer Aubrey William, who is an ordained Mobed, asked about attorney David Tachau. “What compels him to tell the truth?
“He will say anything,” Williams said, according to a transcript of the bench conference Wednesday before Council Court Chairman Jim King that was obtained by The Courier-Journal.
That would seem to strike anyone as blatant and bigoted sectarianism (in this case, Zoroastrian sectarianism) injected into a secular court case. Why would the actual Christian sectarianism be any better? |
