You won't believe some of the ignorance of basic knowledge that is displayed in this thread I plucked from NASA's Google+ account. People actually seem worried that crashing an asteroid into the Moon will destroy it. They seem to miss the fact that it's covered in craters.

If it was big enough to destroy the Moon, it would be too big to deflect into it in the first place. |

Which has happened before. There are plenty of meteorites of lunar origin. But few survive passage through Earth's atmosphere. |

Yeah, it's a losing battle it seems... The media does not help. I read an article that said... '25% don't know the Earth revolves around the Sun!'
Of course it revolves around it's axis and orbits the sun, but whoever said the details were important to science.
Of course I didnt bother to tell them that their own stupid survey is partly to blame. If perhaps you would word the questions correctly the ignorance might wane a bit. |
"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History
"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini |
