Another anniversary of the explosion of Mount St. Helens has passed, and I'd like to highlight an excellent series of posts on the subject by Dana Hunter on her Scientific American blog, Rosetta Stones:

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “The Current Quiet Interval Will Not Last…”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “One of the Most Active and Most Explosive Volcanoes in the Cascade Range”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “The Unusual Character of the Seismic Activity Became Clear”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “Something Dramatic”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “Pale-blue Flames”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “The Only Way It Can Stabilize is to Come Down”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “Our Best Judgement of Risk”

Prelude to a Catastrophe: “The Volcano Could Be Nearing a Major Event”

Interlude: Moment of Silence

The Cataclysm: “Vancouver! Vancouver! This Is It!”

The Cataclysm: “One of the Most Dramatic Mass-Movement Events of Historic Time”

Interlude: “Lateral Blasts of Great Force”

The Cataclysm: “A Sudden Exposure of Volatile Material”

The Cataclysm: “That Whole Mountain Range Had Just Exploded”

The Cataclysm: “A Boiling Mass of Rock”

The Cataclysm: “I Was Just Instantly Buried”

Interlude: When Vehicles Become Part of the Geologic Record

The Cataclysm: “The Path of Maximum Abrasion”

The Cataclysm: “Fully Down and Buried”

The Cataclysm: “Stripped from the Proximal Forest”

And then, because (she says) the subject is just too big for a simple series of blog posts, she added these addenda:

To Mount St. Helens on the 32nd Anniversary of Her May 18th, 1980 Eruption

Dave Crockett’s Narrow Escape

Interlude: “To Paradise With Pleasure Haunted With Fear”

A Survivor’s Tale: “Half the mountain exploding over our heads”

A Volcano Changes Everything

Let’s Do the Time Warp Again: Newly Discovered Images of Mount St. Helens Pre-Eruption Will Leave You Stunned

And she also has a six-part Field Trip Guide:

Dana Hunter now promises a book on Mount St. Helens.

In the meantime, she's written an awesomely informative piece on Pompeii.

Oh cool. Thanks!

I flew over Mount St. Helens a few years after it blew, on my way to Washington and Canada. The destruction was amazing to see. Trees spread out from the mountain for many miles knocked over by the blast with the bases of the tree trunks aimed toward the mountain and the rest of the leafless trunks facing away, all around the mountain. From the air I could see the breadth of the destruction. Amazing.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
