This is the most depressing map you all will see for quite some time...it shows how bad the world's child labour situation is. Even the States are yellow (mild danger).
The article's list of the worst countries is rather grim.

So what's the solution? It's pretty hard to improve the conditions for those children. Even if the western companies using sweatshops pay more for the labour, I doubt any of that would filter down to the labourers. Using local manufacturers might seem more ethical, but basically you're taking away 1 dollar a month from a poor family that needs it. Was there ever a point in time where these countries didn't have child labour? Before sweatshops they would have been out in the fields, or helping in some other trade. Isn't the idea of children not working full time until they reach adulthood is a 20th century western ideal? Child labour is symptomatic of a deeper problem, and can be found any time and any place in which there was/is poverty. |

I can see two possible solutions to the poverty problem: either a minimum wage legislation, or strong unions with high degree memberships. As long as there is high unemployment, the employers can easily pit workers against each other since they compete for the chance to work, a strong union is unlikely.
Increase taxes for the wealthy and invest the money into education, healthcare, and infrastructure for everyone.

That would help the States, along with making churches pay their fair share of taxes, but what about all those underdeveloped countries? |

No. No it wouldn't.
This seems to be a fluff piece which conflates all types of child labor together. We have laws on the books now to protect most children from working long hours. The only exception is farm labor.
That's right. Paper delivery boys, girl scout cookie salesgirls, and family farms which cannot afford additional hired hands put us in "yellow" for child labor.
It's like the Bradys claiming many school shootings and intimate that it was a Columbine type shooting. Only this time it is looking at raw numbers instead of type and institutionalization of the child labor.
I call shenanigans. |
