I watched A Royal Affair, a Danish movie about 18th century crazy king Christian VII and the influence of his wife and physician who were Enlightenment idealists. The king was manipulated to enact sweeping reforms including prevention of torture, allow free speech, help the poor, and there were free vaccinations (inoculations). Sadly, there was a backlash due to overspending, religious opposition, and embarrassment over the affair. Conservatives caused Denmark to become a backwater for some time before rebounding.
Note that it is a very long yet beautiful movie, and almost all of it is in Danish with English subtitles. It was interesting hearing vaguely familiar words and phrases from my childhood.
