I just got back from grocery shopping. While shopping, this happened. An elderly lady was in the gluten free isle looking for crackers to buy. As nicely as I could, I asked her if she had celiac disease. I told her that I understand that it’s not really any of my business if she didn’t want to talk to me. She told me she never had a problem eating regular crackers. So I offered to be of some help to her. I told her that for the most part, the gluten free thing is a fad. If glutens have never bothered her, why pay more for something that doesn’t taste as good as regular crackers?
She told me that she heard that glutens help to bring on Alzheimer’s disease, plus they weren’t healthy in general. I hadn't heard of the Alzheimer thing. Anyhow, I told her that I doubted it very much, and that a lot of the information being spread about glutens is false. I also pointed out that if she has enjoyed eating regular bread and crackers all her life, why spend more on food that doesn't taste as good and will not benefit her health wise in any way? I mentioned that I’m a skeptic, and this is the sort of thing we try to keep up on. I mentioned that we don’t think much of Dr. Oz and his promotion of miracle diets, as an example of a typical skeptical position on non-evidenced claims. I also recommended that she google the “Science Based Medicine” site for a real lowdown on glutens.
She smiled, put the gluten free crackers back on the shelf, thanked me and headed off to buy crackers that she will actually enjoy eating.
It’s always a little bit of a risk butting into someone’s business like that. At worst though, they might tell you that Mike Adams is their hero and that you can buzz off. Best case is that you save someone some money and they get to stop worrying about something that they shouldn’t be worried about.
Now and then, people will listen.

Every little bit counts.
I don't know whether the Mike Adamses or the skeptics are "winning," but I know that if we don't try, we'll lose for sure.
But what were you doing in the gluten-free aisle, Kil? Just laying in wait for little old ladies to pounce on with your damnable evidence?! |
