I really didn't know what folder to put this in since it's about health, politics, media issues. pseudoscience and so on. So I stuck it here.

OBAMA SIGNS HISTORIC GMO LABELING BILL

Quote:For lawmakers from both parties, the bill was a flawed compromise, either because it will require disclosure of GMOs or because it didn't mandate the on-package labeling that typically gets strong support in consumer polls.

But food and agriculture interests nationwide were united in their support for the bill, which had the support of the Organic Trade Association as well as the conventional industry that relies on biotechnology. The Obama administration and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack played a key role, too, in helping develop the bill as a way to end the long-running controversy over GMO labeling and provide some certainty for the future of biotechnology.

I suppose I must look at this as bad news and good news, all things considered. The law will set a national standard for labeling GMOs which pretty much voids Vermont's rather draconian law and prevents a mish-mosh of different state laws with regard to GMO labeling. That will help to prevent a rise in the cost of food at least to some extent.

Of course, there is still the strangeness of singling out transgenics without considering mutagenically bred crops and other kinds of genetically modified plants. Not that I think those plants should require labeling. It's the double standard that's baffling until you understand that for organic certification, it's okay to zap seeds with radiation or give them a chemical bath to promote mutations in the plant that might be beneficial. Mutation breeding is far more haphazard than transgenics and has a far greater chance of creating allergens, since the mutagenic method of creating a genetically modified plant (and that is what they are) can affect its entire genome. But hey... They can be certified organic.

Clearly, singling out transgenics is based on the successful fear mongering of groups like Greenpeace and a large segment of the organic industry that seeks greater market share.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

The next logical step for us to promote an amendment to the GMO-law by including mutagenically modified foods. With carefully considered language and fear-mongering, you should be able push the legislation through, and by that, rendering the GMO-label meaningless.

Great news, I hope the stigma will lead to GMO products being cheaper and more affordable.
