The fad this year is cupping. That is some eastern medicine thing which is basically a suction cup on affected area.

I remember the last Olympics everyone was wearing that kinesio tape. That stuff actually has a legitimate use, it's supposed to provide tactile feedback, e.g. you put it on your back and you will know when you're rounding or twisting because of the stretching effect on the skin. But they were just slapping it on places that hurt.

Every year there is some new fad for athletes, why are they so fucking stupid? Surely saying a quick prayer is all anyone needs, not gimmicks.

It would be interesting to see a study on how many athletes did this.

I'm pretty sure you'd find a high level of fucking stupid membership from countries where people are not sceptical to a high degree (such as China, Japan, or USA) and rather few fucking stupid athletes from agnostic countries (like Sweden, Norway, and Finland). But that's just me guessing.

Cupping – Olympic Pseudoscience

Thanks, Michael Phelps, for glamorizing cupping quackery!

My last word (I hope): Michael Phelps, cupping, and “integrative medicine”
