so a spirit is something that survives the death of the body. How do you know that anything survives the death of the body? How do you detect this spirit?

In other words, Flacus, no: the existence of spirits is not beyond the reach of science. Scientific analysis has very clearly demonstrated that spirits as you define them cannot exist, since it would necessarily imply a separate mind-body and mind-brain (also known as "dualism"). | Afterlives are bunk. Every thing that makes you *you* (awareness/consciousness, emotion, feeling, behavior, etc.) is a process. When that process ends, you end. A candle flame doesn’t go anywhere after it burns out. It ends. We will simply end. |

It fascinates me that some people can advocate for "holistic medicine" and a separation of mind and body (in the form of spirits or souls that might survive death) simultaneously.
