On Tuesday, April 11th, 2006, in the early morning hours here in the U.S., the SFN's Internet Service Provider is going to be moving our Web site to a new server. They tell us that this will necessitate changing our Web site's IP address, so the change may take some time to "percolate" through the Internet's Name Servers. Though our ISP isn't saying so, I imagine this sort of switch may involve the standard "up to 48 hours" for the IP address changes to go through to most name servers worldwide.
In other words, if the SFN vanishes on Tuesday morning (US time), then keep trying. If you're still having problems after Thursday morning, send an email to atomic@skepticfriends.org and/or davew@skepticfriends.org and we'll see if we can help. (Note those email addresses now, just in case.)

What are the chances of an opt-in email notification of the new IP address once it is known?

John, if all you do is go to www.skepticfriends.org to get here, then you shouldn't need to know the IP address unless your DNS servers are slow to get the new IP address themselves. But if you, like me, start twitching from withdrawal if you don't get to see the SFN pages every 15 minutes or so, I'd suggest sending an email to @tomic (at his email addy previously posted) and beg him to send you the IP as soon as he knows it.
By the way, on a personal note, every time I've set up a new IP address, the DNS servers I go through have figured it out in just a few hours. The 48-hour figure is typically cited as "worst case." |

This should be seamless folks. That is, no one should even notice the change unless they habitually ping domains. I only sent Dave & David an email as a heads up in case something goes wrong as happened with one site I worked on recently. Only that was a mistake by the hosting company that we had fixed as soon as the company was told to get on it.

As you say, ping's aren't always responded to, although SFN does respond from my current location. Maybe a trace route would be more informative, it has the added bonus of telling you what your DNS servers currently believe the domain should be resolved to. If it's still the old IP address after the change, you know there are update issues.
