Seems the animal was introduced in the form of a couple pets just thirty years ago, and then released into the wild when they got so big that the owner didn't want to deal with them anymore. Releasing a breeding pair of lizards that can lay up to 75 eggs at a time into a habitable environment where they have no natural predators... oops.

To the herp community, this is old news. More old news is that FL is an ecological basket case that is filled with imported species, many of them more damaging than the vegetarian iguanas. The cane toad and a couple of species of tick, for example. Also Burmese python, specticaled caiman, and possibily, monicaled cobra -- this last I got word-of-mouth, but from someone not given to bullshit.

What would be good news is a recipe for giant, green iguana. I've eaten them in SA and they really are quite tasty.
