It should warm the cockles of your tender and devout, little heart.

Seems that some baseball team or other in Colorado is pretty much going all Christian. And it seems to be starting a trend.
quote:
The Rockies Pitch Religion

Dave Zirin

In Colorado, there stands a holy shrine called Coors Field. On this site, named for the holiest of beers, a team plays that has been chosen by Jesus Christ himself to play .500 baseball in the National League West. And if you don't believe me, just ask the manager, the general manager and the team's owner.

In a remarkable article from Wednesday's USA Today, the Colorado Rockies went public with the news that the organization has been explicitly looking for players with "character." And according to the Tribe of Coors, "character" means accepting Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior. "We're nervous, to be honest with you," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "It's the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs." When people are nervous that they will offend you with their beliefs, it's usually because their beliefs are offensive.

As Rockies chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort said, "We had to go to hell and back to know where the Holy Grail is. We went through a tough time and took a lot of arrows."

Hmm. While baseball has never been a favorite sport of mine and Coors is kind of a blah beer, I suppose I could keep track of the one without having to drink the other. Let's see how they end up at season's close....

Will prayer enhance practice? Will a grateful God slow opposing homerun hits by changing the wind and aid the faithful by changing it back again? Will constant, public conformation of faith increase all-important gate revenues?

Stay tuned.....

Gosh. I wonder if you have to be a crucifix-carrying Babble-thumper to attend the games - you know, to pay the entrance fees or buy from the concessions? Consistency demands that they don't take money tainted by having passed through heretical hands right?

Get your Coors "Blood of Christ" Light here! Yep! That's 4% character-building "Amen" power!
You got your money-of-character?

This is part of an on-going scheme to transform baseball games (both minor and eventually all major leagues,) into fundamentalist Christian recruitment rallies. (With Republican Party voter registration not far behind, since fundamentalist Christianity is actually a political movement.)

New York Times recent article:

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

What is it with these people? They all claim to know the mind of God.
quote:
"On Faith Night, God cares a lot more about what's happening in the stands than about what happens on the field," Mr. High said.
What gives this intellectually spavined nudnik the idea that God (assuming) will even be watching. What if he's off at some do; some celestial event with games of chance and drinks, and down & dirty dancing, and debauchery with the immortal hot chicks that hang seductively out in such places? What if he has a really good chance to get to third base with Alchmea, who has become a ball o' fire since she dumped her old man a few milina ago? Give her a glass of ouzo and a hit on the bong, and look out!

Oh.... You say that God doesn't go in for that sort of thing? He does not indulge in strong liquors nor engage in high steppin' and stud-hoss poker, nor the delights of any sort of carnality. Geeze.... What does he do for R&R, then? Must be something really exotic -- I mean, with the entire universe and beyond at his mere whim, do you really think that he's gonna be at some dumb baseball game? Do you think he's that much of a dork?

Do you know the mind of God so well; you who cannot even confirm the existance of him/her/it but must take the whole thing on unsupported faith?

I don't think it's gonna work in the long run. I think the percentages of the faithful as opposed to the numbers of the casual believers and the non-believers (same thing to a fundie) will remain about the same. Attendence figures in some localities might spike a bit, then gradually get back to normal. Just a thought; not really predicting much of anything.

Well, the Coors family has long been a far right-wing force in and beyond Colorado. Old-fashioned, union-busting industrialists, centered in their company town of Golden. When I toured the plant there about twenty-five years back, they had right-wing propaganda displays laying about on the tour route.

So, now the Coors are going to explicitly discriminate in their hiring of players, coaches, trainers and other team staff, on the basis of religion? Christians only. Damned Jews need not apply. So much for the next Sandy Koufax.

This should be interesting. The Rockies management should be nervous. There really are laws against that kind of thing. Fucking Theonazis.

I think the result will not be very successful. Any team that practices such discrmination is limiting the talent pool that they can draw players from (just as an all white team would be at disadvantage) and they may have other problems as well.

Many years ago I read an article in the Calgary Herald about born again Christian athletes. The gist of the article was that many coachs felt that religous athletes were undesirable because they did not take personal responsibility for a poor perfmance. They considered a loss to be God's will. They gave the Calgary Flames hockey team as an example. When the franchise moved to Calgary from Atlanta in the mid 80s the team was full of "Born Again" Christians. These were quickly traded away. The result was a team capable of holding their own against the Edmonton Oilers (then in their Glory days with Wayne Gretzky) and eventually a Stanley Cup (NHL championship).

Fascinating point. I'd somehow never considered that angle. But the flip side to that coin, athletes who give all credit to God for their victories has always rankled me. It's saying that training, conditioning, strategy, teamwork and good coaching are unimportant. Either way, this highlights the personal irresponsibility of the very "faithful."

(Also, have you ever heard a religious athlete say, "We lost, because God hates our team"?)

The de facto standard joke is that you'll never hear a football player say, "Jesus made me fumble."

Or a baseball player saying, "Jesus made me take steroids"?

Wow, I'll have to go to a few games. Hold up a few of my sigs!!! I'll fit right in!!!!

What came first the chicken or the egg?

How do plants exist without bugs in the soil, and bugs in the soil without plants producing oxygen?

There are no atheists in foxholes

Underlying the evolutionary theory is not just the classic "stuff" of science — conclusions arrived at through prolonged observation and experimentation. Evolution is first an atheistic, materialistic world view. In other words, the primary reason for its acceptance has little to do with the evidence for or against it. Evolution is accepted because men are atheists by faith and thus interpret the evidence to cor-respond to their naturalistic philosophy.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. II Timothy 4:3,4

II Thess. 2:11 And for this cause God shall
send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

You can not see the 'wind', but you can see its effect!!!!

Evolution was caused by genetic mistakes at each stage?

Radical Evolution has 500 million years to find fossils of fictional drawings of (hard core)missing links, yet they find none.

We have not seen such moral darkness since the dark ages, coencides with
teaching evolution in schools. (Moral darkness)

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, EPH 6:12.

"Thus, many scientists embracing naturalism find themselves in the seeming dilemma recently articulated by biochemist Franklin Harold: "We should reject, as a matter of principle, the substitution of intelligent design for the dialogue of chance and necessity [i.e., Darwinian evolution]; but we must concede that there are presently no detailed Darwinian accounts of the evolution of any biochemical system, only a variety of wishful speculations."
