quote: Recent research has found evidence that the value of certain fundamental parameters, such as the speed of light or the invisible glue that holds nuclei together, may have been different in the past.
"There is absolutely no reason these constants should be constant," says astronomer Michael Murphy of the University of Cambridge. "These are famous numbers in physics, but we have no real reason for why they are what they are."
The observed differences are small — roughly a few parts in a million — but the implications are huge: The laws of physics would have to be rewritten, not to mention we might need to make room for six more spatial dimensions than the three that we are used to.
Very interesting!
However, I can't wait until the YECers take this information and spew out their predictable garbage...

He meant 4 dimensions.
The implications are huge - maybe the atomic nuclei will just fall apart before the heat death of the universe. Well there not the huge for me - I don't expect to see this happen next week...

Just as soon as he rectifies the whole rewriting nearly every major astronmical idea of the last century without evidence fiasco. |

Actually, he's talking about spacial dimensions, not time dimensions, so his 3 and 10 (with regard to String Theory) are correct. |

Difficult to even approach in terms of how it would be posited or framed, not to mention what kind of math and predictions it would try to make, but a Theory of the Value of Constants might be an interesting concept.

Oops, I was taking into account dark energy and acceleration in the Z axis when I said 4 dimensions. Since these do not appear to be taken into account in this article, I stand corrected.

Then you should have said 5 dimensions. Sheesh!quote: Since these do not appear to be taken into account in this article, I stand corrected.
Actually, since those aren't taken into account in that article, its conclusions are hopelessly unreliable, no matter how many dimensions are posited. |

My question is, where do the little gnomes fit into this description of the universe? |

As for the article itself, has it been accepted by any journals?
That's my layman's "common sense" gut reaction, too. But I realize that "common sense" does not always accurately describe the real world. Yet maybe, given just a few more epicycles to smooth things out, Ptolemy would be back in vogue.

Well, the Ptolemaic system with deference and epicycle was used for about 1000 years with good accuracy. They made predictions that spanned over decades with little need for corrections. Even long after Galileo, time table predictions for the planets were made using the Ptolemaic system. |
