Didn't know the name. Another unsung hero that theists and nontheists alike would like to shut up.

When Phil Paulson died Wednesday, San Diego lost one of her greatest heroes. It also lost her most despised citizen. Paulson was a man who didn't believe in God. Neither did more others than will admit to it. Paulson admitted it and stood up for all of us whether we came out of the closet with our secret or not.

We atheists aren't popular in this country. The constitutions of seven states – Arkansas, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Tennessee – prohibit us from holding any statewide office. Of course it's unconstitutional, but it's there, perhaps as a reminder of our place in the hearts of our countrymen.

Damn! From the article:
quote:
Of course Paulson had lots of practice at facing down dogma. When he was a child, he asked one question too many in his Lutheran catechism class. “If God created us, who created God?” That's been a question of philosophers and theologians for centuries, but this time it came from a child! The pastor of his parish dragged him from the classroom by the ear. He then called his mom who further punished him and made him pray on his knees every night for forgiveness and enlightenment for two weeks.
That was a pretty good question, especially coming from a kid. Of course, the only real answer he got was abusive force.

But let's look at that question, spinning it through the "logic" of Intelligent Design.

“If God created us, who created God?” Hmmm...

Clearly, if mere pond slime, slouching beasts, and much loftier humans are "irreducibly complex," then mighty Jehovah, Lord of Creation, must be even more complex and irreducible. This demands that He must have been created by a Super-God some unknown, but not necessesarily supernatural, super-intelligent design force/being/process. Though we may not be able to quantify or scientifically study this force/being/process, this is all obviously really scientific-y stuff. But we must never (for legal reasons) refer to it as Super-God.

I'm curious, Gorgo: Why would nontheists have wanted to shut Paulson up?

Many atheists don't particularly like people who rock the boat. They distrust people like Newdow and Paulson and say that a lot of these fights are not important. Or at least that's my impression.

Well, I admit I don't scream out my atheism in public, usually. But I sure appreciate those with the courage do do so, especially when they do it with class like Paulson did. I can't speak for others.

It would probably be best if I didn't, either.
