Las Vegas
I can't believe it took a judge to overturn this. Not providing food for them is one thing, denying them food is another. Frekin' morons. I am surrounded by morons......

I would suppose the casinos were behind the feeding ban. They doubtless want to have the homeless swept under the rug, unfed, to provide an appearance of a clean, safe city for drunks and gamblers to come to. Glad to see the ban is being overturned. Maybe this will force Vegas actually address the problem, and not try to just hide the symptoms.
But I doubt it.

True. After they take the money from them, and then their houses... What use are they I realize that that is only a very small precentage of them..... The others they never had any use for.
I hate that city...

The article stated that the reason for the law was that homeless people were not looking for professional, or rather governmental, help because they were being fed by others. Whether this is the case or not, I'm not sure. But it sounds at least plausible.
More plausible that Vegas would rather pay for feeding the homeless, than have charitable people do it at their own cost? I find hiding away the unsightly human by-products of Sin City to be more plausible. The idea the local government wants to help them is just an excuse for stopping people from feeding them, IMHO. Much better PR than saying, "These people scare the marks away."
If Vegas were overrun by pigeons, I can imagine the City Fathers passing an ordinance to prohibit feeding of the birds. Instead of honestly telling people the purpose was to starve the pigeons to death, they might say that by not feeding them, they were simply encouraging them to get mail delivery jobs with the Post Office.

That may certainly be so. But it sounds like you're reaching a conclusion based on rampant speculation without considering all the possibilities.
Ah, you've deduced my methodology with uncanny accuracy. But since this is essentially politics, a more scientific approach is not very likely to do much better. Going with one's gut feeling may not work for rocket design, but it's really not all that bad for figuring out politics. At least until Psychohistory is perfected.

Hey, moonie--it looks like you also have a spot in your heart for a conspiracy theory... What evidence do you have for your doubtless claim? |

I've been to 'Vegas a couple of times, in the '80s and early '90s. The first time, I won a few hundred at a craps table (betting against the shooter(s), mostly, and never picking up the dice myself) and the second, I was just passing through and didn't play. So, I figger I beat the house -- very small-time, true, but beat the bastards never the less. It's a predatory town (casino odds are atrocious) that struggles to create an image that it can't maintain, and the attempt to starve out the homeless is but a small part of it.
Unfortuantly, this is not limited to Las Vegas. Every once in a while I read about attempts to roust them, in the US and elsewhere, usually just before a big event like the Olympics or when some pissant dignitary or other visits. It looks to me like putting a bandage on a bubo -- the unsightly blemish is covered up, but the infection remains. Not being a social scientist, I don't know what the solution might be.
It is sad to note that a goodish percentage of the homeless are veterans, largely of Vietnam, and lately Iraq vets are showing up at the shelters. And another too-large percentage represents mothers with children.

Ok! So that was your reason for 700+ moronic posts in the conspiracy threads.
Well, you were able to mimic the modus operandi of a clueless conspiracy looser with perfection. Stellar acting, but an utterly boring performance.
