This is an interesting contrast to the CNN discussion about "Why do atheists inspire such hatred?" It is a panel discussion on the topic "America is Too Damned Religious". I find the topic's wording to be sensationalist and loaded in several bad ways. The content of the discussion, however, is excellent. You can listen to the shorter version that was broadcast on NPR or you can listen to the whole version. I personally found Rev. Barry Lynn of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State to be the most inspiring and in-line with my views on this topic. Susan Jacoby is pretty awesome too.

Just saved the MP3 to listen to on the way home this afternoon.
You're right though, the title really should have been:
"America is Too God Damned Religious"

I downloaded what I thought was the full version, but turned out to be only the 45 highlight reel.
I found it unsatisfying. To me the team from the negative were just entirely unconvincing and disengaging. I am very aware of my own bias, but even so, it just seemed like the negative team were arguing like high school kids assigned to the team by random and not particularly keen to be there.
I'd like to listen to the whole thing, but it seems that only the short version is downloadable. I'm unlikely to sit at the computer just to listen to the longer one. I doubt there's a lot of value in watching the debate. I might set up a computer to record the audio for me some time while I do something else, if so I'll see if I can post a link to it. |

In my recollection (it's been a month now since I listened to it) I was rather offended by some of the remarks from the negative side because they implied that religion makes people more moral, or more likely to take action for human rights. But both religious and secular people have been on both sides of every great human rights struggle in America, so to uphold religiously led social action as something special only discounts those less visible and less unified secular individuals who went right along with the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, and civil rights. |
