Beleaguered Neon cartel launches ad blitz

New York, February 19, 2007 (NE) -- The American Neon Advisory Board, the US Neon industry's leading trade and promotional association, today launched a series of hard-hitting TV, radio, and print media ads. The campaign, according to ANAB spokesman I. P. Constantly, is intended to draw the attention of Americans to the importance of the element, and to the dangers of a declining Neon industry.

Here are some of the images used in the new campaign:

The first image appeals to patriotism.

Next, there is the threat of dirty foreign Neon.

Look what imported Neon does to American working families!

And Americans aren't using Neon as much anymore.

But what are those Chinese doing with all that Neon?

Hooray for Neon!

I really liked the intro. It had a hint of mad-magazine about it. You lost me a little in the middle, but won me back at the end, perhaps unintentionally.

The last image reminds me of my days working at the CLA (Centre for Lasers and Applications). A large part of my work involved copper-vapour lasers. Neon was used as the buffer gas to get the tubes up to temperature (around 1100 oC).

That lovely orange glow was all you got looking up the tube, until it got hot enough to lase, and then you got the even more lovely green (511 nm) and yellow (578 nm). Looking up the tube once it was really going, of course, is a bad thing.

John's just this guy, you know.

Cool!

I forgot to add a photo of the Hindenberg in flames. It would have said, "If they had only used Neon!"

I love the "Got Neon?" bit... and the doggy picture too.

Thanks, Sib! It was a new challenge for me to get that Mao poster on the tank. The part I had to figure out was how to make it bend with the curve of the tank. I think I fiddled around with Photohop's "Polar Coordinates" filter until it looked right.

And I'm always a sucker for dogs, which is why they usually like me. Dogs are highly evolved to exploit people. Like preachers.
