· North African fossil hints at ties to humans today
· Find shows growth of complex society

Alok Jha, science correspondent
Tuesday March 13, 2007
The Guardian

Modern humans were living in northern Africa far earlier than previously thought, according to scientists. A new analysis of a 160,000-year-old fossilised jawbone from Morocco shows that the homo sapiens in the area had started having long childhoods, one of the hallmarks of humans living today.
Great find -- let the fulminous denials begin!

Denials, pfft. You dont need to deny anything, just extend the length of one God day to 25,000 years. Problem solved.

Now that is remarkable, Fil. But maybe it's just an early April Fools joke. After all, the author of the article is given as one "Alok Jha, science correspondent" (my emphasis).

Saw it at a couple of other places, including The Sludge Report. Of course, the real comfirmation will come when AiG, ICR, and Bill Dembski's Paraplegic Circus pick it up and start spinning it.

I wasn't seriously disputing the article, just trying to find humor in it.

In the past, I hadn't actually thought much about the issue of a long childhood in human evolution, but in retrospect, it seems a slam-dunk certainty that it's a vital step. More time to develop the brain, learn skills, and pressure to form more sophisticated societal ties that protect and acculturate kids. It seems that language would fit in well with all this, though there are probably no marks of it on the jawbones.

I'd sure like to know more about these possible ancestors!
