So Yahoo has a list of the most common misspelled words. It's amazing-- or not?-- that it's virtually all made up of young female entertainers. And though I never use Yahoo, I know I'd searched for "Amtrack" instead of "Amtrak" on Google a million times... |

I know I'm getting old. There are a number of "names" on there that mean little to me, and most I've heard but would fail to recognise should I run into one at rehab.
I can think of more than two ways to misspell Britney Spears though:

Just back from a trip to the Great Barrier Reef, Austraila. Eleven dives. A couple of mantas. Two turtles. HEAPS of reef sharks. Lots of the usual suspects (the gobis, the surgeons, the trigger fishes etc). The reefs (reeves?) were healthy looking and marine life was abundant. No hammer heads, though...
Just rubbing it in. Call me a sadist, if you like. |

One that I am curious about is the crown of thorns sea star. These have been damaging the reef considerably over the last few decades, or so I've read. Did you see any of these?
Aren't the big mantas cool?

HELP! Ok, so I just got a new computer and I'm trying to make some word processor decisions. Background: I have used WordPerfect in the past, and would prefer that over Word. I like the ability to make a macro on WP better, and am more accustomed to its layout and the like. Moreover, the newest version-- X3-- lets you save things in PDF format (I think) which is nice.
The problem is that WP doesn't support something called unicode fonts. Here's where I get lost. I don't know much about unicode, but for some articles I have to write (one of which is due soon!), they editors all request unicode. With this in mind, I'd like to step up and get a word processor that does that.
If I'm going to pass on Word (mostly because of money-- their office suite even on cheap discount sites is out of my budget), then I have only a few options. One is something called OpenOffice, which is a free open source suite that seems pretty cool. I downloaded it and have been playing around with it. The problem is, when I tried to install a font I know is unicode (because one editor linked to it), on the OpenOffice word processor Write, it seems to come out blocky and funny.
So now I'm trying to find some other unicode font that will work with Write, but haven't had much luck installing anything even though-- according to some searches-- they seem to support unicode.
Then I read that something called "OpenType" (as opposed to "TrueType") is all unicode, so in theory I should be able to use any OpenType font and be confident that it's unicode. Right? Or not. Can some tech person sort this out for me?!?
Update: It seems like perhaps things have worked better than I thought. This morning, after turning off and on my computer, the unicode fonts I installed now seem to show up fine. We'll see how it goes, I guess.
Still, and answers to the above would be appreciated. Someone should also feel free to explain "XML" format, since OpenOffie Write opts to save its document in this format... |

Not a single one. There was no apparent coral bleaching what-so-ever.

Oh, yeah!!! We were sitting at ~30 metres at a known cleaning station, itself sitting at a drop-off to maybe 1000 metres. The current was screaming past us. All of a sudden, I could see the faint outline of a manta flying straight at us. It stopped maybe 5 metres from us - and stayed there for the short duration of the dive - to get a good clean. All along, white-tip and grey reef sharks (I could see 8 at one point) were swimming 10 metres below our position. Pretty good dive, I would say. |

I think you made the right choice on OpenOffice. Apart from some VB specific scripting stuff in the Micrsoft format, it will handle pretty much anything you throw at it from older documents you may have.
As to XML, it's a document standard that can be used to encapsulate lots of document types. The format itself, at the lowest level, is plain text, and can be viewed/edited in that format.
XLM originated , in part, as a tool for describing documents for web publication. It's like HTML in that it has tags which describe certain features of the document. The nice thing about XML is the "X" part, which is for eXtensible. This means there aren't just a fixed set of tags for bold/italics/headings etc etc. The standard itself supports creating your own tags and meta-tags which describe what those other tags are for.
The great thing about using open standards, like XML, is that you never have have to worry about being forced to use/buy a particular bit of software in order to open/edit it, at least in general terms.
Of course, there are issues with compatibility, in that a helluva a lot of the world is using, and will continue to use MS Office products.
The Wikipedia entry for XML is pretty good, but gets technical reasonably quickly. I hope this helps, but feel free to bug me some more if you like.

Why or why can't there be a Democratic candidate this time around that I like better than Dennis Kucinich? Every time I start to like something that one of the major candidates is saying during the debates, good ol' Denny comes in and bashes their mediocrity and willingness to compromise, and then says everything I want to hear.
It's not fair. *sniff*

Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul are the only two honest candidates running. I would love to see them debate. They are both closer to the American peoples beliefs than all of the others running combined.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell |

Kent Hovind has been e-mailing God - and he gets answers. Snippet:
KH: Lord, I asked you to let me sleep, because I knew the next day would be hard and I would need my strength. Why didn't you let me sleep, Lord?
GOD: I did, son. You slept great from 3:00 - 4:45 a.m. Who do you think it was that made the guard forget to call you at 3:30? Didn't you wake up refreshed at 4:45 and even comment on how hard you slept and how good you felt? |
Detailed answers at that. |

Q: Why was it that the late, great Jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald once turned down a proposal for marriage from Lord Darth Vader? (Highlight the answer below.)
A: She didn't want to be called Ella Vader.

Poll after poll after poll shows that the majority of Americans are true moderates of various sorts. Kucinich and Paul are anything but moderates. Kucinich is an old-style, die-hard liberal, and Ron Paul is a fanatic libertarian. |
