This is one of those terms that has a thousand meanings, most of which bug the shit out of me. Most people say it in reference to any calamity which would 'stone age' humans. I for one am taking this term back where it belongs! The end of humanity =/= the end of the world, nor does the lack of civilization.

The end of the world will only happen when the planet is no more. <-- note the period!

Perhaps when people use it to mean "end of humanity" or "end of civilization" they're saying "it's the end of the world (as we know it)." You may or may not feel fine about that.

Japanese film illustrates large asteroid impact. This would be The End. (As far as life is concerned, though perhaps some microbes might survive to start it all over again.)

(The Acropolis ruin surviving is a nice touch.)

Yeah it would take an dwarf planet 1/4 our size to really do the trick, these pesky bacteria lie dormant in water drops trapped in deep salt deposits.

If I'm doing my imaginary calculations properly, I would image that even a vastly smaller dwarf planet hitting us at the proper angle would drastically reduce our orbit speed, thus, reducing the distance between Earth and the Sun, and hence, heating our planet past the point of no return.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

The English rock band City Boy made an album called "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" in which all songs more or less revolved around different aspects of "the end of the world".

Ranging from "When you're lonely it's only the end of the world"
to "I've got no more use for my radio: the whole world ended just an hour ago..."
and "run for your life, the earth's caught fire"

I love the album, and if you enjoy well thought out lyrics, and enjoy rock from the late 70s early 80s, give the album a listen.

Dr. Mabuse - "When the going gets tough, the tough get Duct-tape..."
Dr. Mabuse whisper.mp3

"Equivocation is not just a job, for a creationist it's a way of life..." Dr. Mabuse

Absolutely frightening animation. But I had a problem with that one scene. I can't imagine the marble structure of the Acropolis glowing red-hot. Doesn't marble break down and turn to powder at much lesser temperatures?

This wouldn't happen if everyone on the planet was a Ki Master. We could take the punch of any asteroid, or even deflect it away before it hit.

I think the Acropolis part was just a little poetic license - the animators are showing everything being vaporized - but a remnant of ancient Greek civilization symbolically endures.

I think they were illustrating the superior power of Zeus.
