quote: Cool beans. So he [Al Gore] believes that Homo sapiens evolved from other hominid ancestors, right? Nope. In the very same breath, he then continued to explain that according to his religious beliefs, this "rise of humans" was God's creation of mankind - apparently 200,000 years ago. His graph then changed to include the caption "Adam & Eve" above this starting point.
...
Something doesn't add up here. On one hand, he is using science to predict the disastrous outcome of our current actions and rally support for taking proactive measures to make sure bad things don't happen, but on the other hand, he is clinging to stone-age beliefs that another very important area of science has proven wrong (that we humans evolved from other forms of life, and that every organism on Earth has a common ancestor).

On the bright side, I have heard over and over (paraphrasing); "Al Gore says global warming is real so it must be bullshit". If the conservatives apply this thinking to Al's beliefs on the origin of man, we could make some real progress - Go Al!

Conversely, Mr. Gore has also been quoted as saying that Creationism should be taught in schools (if the local school wants to)...perhaps his beliefs could draw over people who normally would be against Environmental Issues based solely on idealogical reasons.
However, I don't like that he is using science to advance one position, then falling back to magic on another position. There's no reason that a Christian cannot accept that evolution was used by God to bring about the special creature Man, unless they are bible literalists.
This is one of the reasons why I voted for Nader. |

Al Gore is a US politician.
He HAS to claim he is a religious man, or his political future is dead.
But he is not alone in his belief that religion and science don't conflict.
And the blog post didn't give us enough detail, really, to determine just what Al's particular religious beliefs are. From what is posted it is impossible to tell if he is a Ken Miller theist or if he believes in the special creation of humans.

Don't let Bill see this thread. It might destroy his delusion that all of us here are only interested in uncritically propping up Al Gore.
