Dave, the U S A lost its sovereignty in Korea. The answer is obvious.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell |

Hmm. Answers #5 & #6 pretty much amount to the same thing. I might suggest:
When lying the country into a needless war becomes an impeachable offense that, if indicted, could/would result in big-time jail-time, or worse.
Which also amounts to the same, damned thing.

I went with the 60 years option, as it includes options 1 and 2 by default, making me statistically more likely to get a big payout on my considerable betting investment.
This assumes (fallatiously, of course, in keeping with the spirit of the thing) that all the options are equally likely. |

Studies have shown that religiosity is tied to how happy people are. Given that, when we get happy as a nation, not many will care if an atheist is elected president. Now for the hard part. We need to become a happy nation first... I'm giving that 60 years. But it could be never. Also, most european nations have a very big lead in that department. So does Canada.
We need to grow up as a nation. We have a long way to go...
By the way, I think a jew like Lieberman could win without much moderate christian or christian fundamentalist objection. |

Who would get elected first - a Muslim/Hindu or an atheist? Polls indicate that we atheists are lowest forms of life on the planet, and that anyone with religious beliefs is preferable... |

This poll is about the future, so I wanted to nip the "but we've already had non-Christian Presidents" complaints in the bud. |

I picked other. The rapture is coming soon so it's a pointless topic. |

That's interesting. My country had two declared atheist presidents (they afterwards denied it, but hey) in a row... one eight years in the government, the other on his second mandate already. But then, we have a completely different culture. |

Lincoln was rumored to be an atheist.
The problem is that about 30 years ago in the US, the conservatives were getting their asses kicked in elections by democrats on a regular basis. They needed more votes.
So they recruited a block of people who are easily manipulated (probably because they tend toward the lower end of the educational and $/year spectrum and are programmed from birth for credulity), the fundamentalist christian. They discovered that you could get a fundamentalist christian to vote against his own self interest on every major issue, if you just included some bible passages in your campaign speeches and if you took their side on some social issues (none of which have any impact on the issues of interest for conservative politicians).
Needless to say, THAT plan has backfired bigtime. Instead of manipulating the fundamentalist voting block, the republican party was taken over by them.
Now you have a president who can't form coherent sentences, has embroiled us in a no win situation in the middle east, and has no plan to fix his mess except to pass it off to the next president... but 28% of the country STILL thinks he is doing a fine job as president!

Dude said "So they recruited a block of people who are easily manipulated"
Dude there are a lot of "groups" that fit this description used by both parties.
