This sure looks like a lenticular cloud. They were over the channel islands - these clouds usually are stationary clouds that form over a hill or mountain. Reflected light from the island or the moon probably made it look very eerie.
Or this independence day could be very interesting...

I loved those gigantic UFOs in Independence Day! The part of the movie that destroyed my suspension of disbelief, though, was the way Jeff Goldblum hacked into the aliens' computers. Totally unbelievable.
Also, I could not imagine George W. Bush heroically donning a flight suit and also then heroically fighting the aliens. He'd be hunkering with his Mommy in an undisclosed, underground location, though probably dressed up in a flight suit.

Predictive programing for a "War of the Worlds" scenario.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell |
