While Googling for a photo of Michael Behe, I ran across the COSMIC ANCESTRY site tonight. They push the hypothesis of panspermia, in a very big, and I think ideologically close-minded, way. They reject both abiogenesis and Darwinian evolution. They see Creationism, evolution, and panspermia as three mutually contradictory subjects, and feel that "life has always existed." They also like Fred Hoyle, and try to play down that "Big Bang thing," probably because it implies that abiogenesis had to happen somewhere. Succinctly stated, I think they are unscientific ideologues, and full of shit.

It's not that I think that panspermia itself is false. I would not at all be surprised if earthly life evolved from simple lifeforms that had drifted to this planet after abiogenesis elsewhere. It's a plausible scenario, unlike Creationism. That there is yet no evidence of this doesn't make it impossible. But that life must have started somewhere, if not on our fruitful world.

Here is one just quote from COSMIC ANCESTRY:
Cosmic Ancestry is a new theory pertaining to evolution and the origin of life on Earth. It holds that life on Earth was seeded from space, and that life's evolution to higher forms depends on genetic programs that come from space.

I really detest when the word "theory" is misused.

Yup. Panspermia, with no real evidence, is a legitimate, though questionable, scientific hypothesis. "Cosmic Ancestry," on the other hand, isn't even a scientific hypothesis, IMO. It smacks of being something akin to the public portion of a cult's core belief system. I wonder if there is, as with Scientology, a secret scripture for the inner circle, perhaps detailing just who is doing the regular DNA software updates for earth?

I really detest when the word "new" preceeds the misused "theory." It is a very good indicator of the utter tripe to follow.

And the absolutely dead giveaway of woo to follow, is when they precede "new scientific theory" with that fatal, tell-tale word, "a".

That clearly indicates they have a whole slew of other crazy ideas, just waiting in the wings.

They are selling books written by Fred Hoyle, which by itself makes them suspect.
At least in my eyes.

On the other hand.....
Organic compound found in the stars
Life-building molecules might be spread throughout space.

Ewen Callaway

Astronomers have found the largest negatively charged molecule so far seen in interstellar space. The discovery, of an organic compound, suggests that the chemical building blocks of life may be more common in the Universe than had been previously thought.

The molecule is a chain of eight carbons and a single hydrogen called the octatetraynyl anion (C8H¯). Two teams of scientists have spotted it near a dying star and in a cloud of cold gas.

Something I stumbled across.....

Now, that's interesting, Fil. If such fairly complex organic compounds actually formed in the gas cloud, it is mind-boggling, at least to me. This gas cloud must be nearly a hard vacuum for most practical purposes. Imagine chemical reactions taking place in such a thin soup. If this can happen, could it mean life itself might be possible in a "vacuum"? Maybe through mechanisms of ionic charge attraction and repulsion?
