For centuries it's been one of the 'perks' of being a scientist - you discover a species, you get to name it. Not in Brazil, where A well regarded biologist committed the sin of trying to raise some money to save the Amazon rain forest. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20219392/

That is some very serious BS, Rat. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. It would have been bad enough if they just ruled that his auction was invalid. Sentencing him to 16 years is criminal. And Brazil's government continues to help destroy Amazonia, its national treasure.

Uh, I seriously don't believe that. Like, I seriously don't.
It's not that I think Brazil's doing such a great job about saving the Amazon - we aren't - but I seriously doubt they'd care so much to throw that dude in jail or even anything remotely like that. We aren't organized enough for that and if the powerful ones around there were really against him, they'd just kill him period.
Besides, he's Dutch and I'd guess he'd be sent back to his country and asked never to set foot on our territory, rather than be jailed (and 16 years? Pfft. I doubt that. Rapists don't stay that long in jail). I'm sifling right now through the possibly responsible court for that decision.
[edit because I'm not that sure he'd actually get deported, even if I think he would.] |
