Bishop urges Christians to call God 'Allah'
Catholic leader believes it would help ease tensions between religions
Bishop Tiny Muskens (Courtesy Radio Netherlands Worldwide) Catholic churches in the Netherlands should use the name Allah for God to ease tensions between Muslims and Christians, says a Dutch bishop.
Tiny Muskens, the bishop of Breda, told the Dutch TV program "Network" Monday night he believes God doesn't mind what he is called, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.
The Almighty is above such "discussion and bickering," he insisted.
Muskens points to Indonesia, where he served 30 years ago, as an example for Dutch churches. Christians in the Middle East also use the term Allah for God.
| It is worthy of note that this article is from the World Nut Net Daily. Can't imagine why they'd run such a thing...
I'd be very interested in the reactions of various pulpit-humpers to it, if any, and I'm especally looking forward to Pastor Deacon Fred's comments. After all, Bishop Tiny is one o' them hell-bound Cathylicks.
It's amusing to think about, at least from an atheist's point of view, but it points up an earlier topic, the one about how Christianity changes to meet it's enviornment. "Allah" might mean "God" in Indonesia, but it means doodly-squat in western congregations. Try and swap the titles around in, say, Pat Robertson's 700 Circlejerk, and see what it gets you.
But it might be interesting to muse upon those reactions. Anybody...?
