Are the Canadians ahead of the USA on this environmental issue, and is the push is coming from a Mounty?:
A member of the Canadian Mounted Police by the name of Mike Lake has officially notified the Canadian Parliament that he believes that Bigfoot should be added to the Nation's, Species at Risk Act. This is similar to the Endangered Species List in the United States.

According to Mr. Lake, the creature that is also known as the Sasquatch is real, and is endangered. The reason, he says that there have not been more sightings in North America of Bigfoot is because the creature is endangered, not necessarily shy like many believe.

Currently there are 516 plants and animals that are listed in the Species at Risk Act in Canada. There are many other candidates for this list that are being considered including the Whooping Crane, the Blue Whale, and Red Mulberry trees.
From my brief follow-up Googling, there do appear to be some problems with this story. For one, Mike Lake seems to be a Conservative member of Parliament from Edmonton, not a member of the RCMP. He's a former member of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team.

Wiki says:
In his first term as a representative in the Canadian House of Commons Lake was presented with a very unusual petition signed by almost 500 individuals calling for Bigfoot to be protected under the Species at Risk Act. Lake filed the petition with the Clerk of the House of Commons on March 28, 2007.[1] Subsequently it was reported by various media that Lake himself had argued in favour of giving such protection to Bigfoot.[2] [3] When interviewed, Lake said that he did not believe in Bigfoot, but filed the petition as a service to constituents without making any judgment call.[4]

Well, if there is a species that has not been cataloged, it probably would be limited in population.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Very limited, in this case, I suspect.

Omigawd, cryptos...

Actually I think that cryptozoology can be a science, and I have written about it on page 11 here. But for the most part the crypto crowd is described in medical terms as 'bonkers'.

Nice article, thanks! I agree, Rat. Most "cryptozoology" is crackpot pseudoscience, but clearly there are still earthly lifeforms not yet discovered, or if discovered, not yet proven.

Some "cryptids" have become newly described species, like the dwarf elephant of Borneo. Sometimes the new species are not even suspected before they are described by science. But the pseudoscience nuts spend their time on the silly stuff like lake monsters, bigfoot, and living dinosaurs, and thus give "cryptozoology" a bad name. It's as if most people calling themselves astronomers were really astrologists.
