In a previous post, I linked with the word "pipistrelle." The pipistrelle is a tiny bat native to Europe and England. |
North America too. The Western Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus hesperus is restricted to the U.S., while the Eastern Pipistrelle, Pipistrellus subflavus, occurs in the eastern U.S. and Canada, where it is a year-round resident, hibernating during the winter (Peterson, 1966).
| I'm familiar with P. subflavus, as I had one take up summer's residence in a nich in a window frame when I lived in northern VT. The European species is generally better known in that plays have been written concerning it: Die Fledermaus
The most common bat in the US is the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus).
This winter, I am going to build a couple of bat boxes in the hope of attracting these. If successful, and it will be, look out next year's mosquitos!
Unfortunatly, bats in general are in decline, but we can help! Everybody must start building bat boxes at once!
Thanks for the info, Rat! Sorry 'bout the hijack, Mooner!

No problem, Fil. Anytime someone wants to hijack any thread I start in the otherwise useless Moonscape, and even more especially for the purpose of talking about nature, they are most welcome to. If a free-form discussion isn't welcome here, I don't know where it would be welcome. I seem to learn something wonderful every day, and "pipistrelle" is the latest. Thank you, Rat and Filthy.
