Elseya irwini is a rare, odd turtle.
This aquatic turtle lives in only one river in Australia. Discovered by the late Steve Irwin and his father, it's a species that is mainly made up of adult females. Both males and juveniles are scarce. Also, they are the largest of Australia's turtles.
Perhaps oddest of all, the turtle has a gill-like structure within its cloaca that allows it to extract oxygen by "breathing" in water through their anuses.
I'm not a herp-lover like Filthy, but even I think these are pretty critters:

Actually quite a few turtles do that when they're hibernating. But with my IBS it gives me the squirms just thinking about constantly 'breathing by enema'. |
