Mass Loss in Standard Reference Kilogram Threatens Science, Modern Life, Orbital Mechanics

Sèvres, France (SP) -- The world's official prototype kilogram is mysteriously losing mass, and scientists don't know why. The protoype kilogram mass, kept in a laboratory vault in Sèvres, south of Paris, is the standard upon which the entire metric weight system is based. 50 micrograms of mass are simply. . . missing.

Ultimately, the Standard Kilogram is the basis for the US pound, which is officially defined by reference to the kilogram. All modern commerce depends upon the standard. Vast amounts of science and engineering rely upon the absolute accuracy of the official kilogram.

Panicked scientists are scrambling for an explanation for the missing mass, and for a way to compensate for a cascading error effect that threatens to invalidate every scientific formula on earth.

Some astrophysicists worry that the earth's orbit around the sun may become unstable, either plunging the earth into the sun's iron surface structure, or hurling our planet into the cold realm of the Oort Cloud.

"It's only 50 micrograms, the merest pinch, that seems to have gone missing," said one scientist. "But the loss of even a pinch is a disaster. We need to order more kilos, immediately!"

"We don't really have a good hypothesis for it," says scientist.

What did you do to Davis' nose, Mooner? Has he been snorting the kilo?

Of course, the real reason the standard kilo has lost weight is that it's been eating less and exercising more, like most of us should be.

Yeah, well, it's not easy to be subtle enough for this lot of high-brow bastards. Anything more obvious would be snubbed.
