Steve Feinberg runs a secretive ship at Cerebus Capital Management. According to Condé Nast Portfolio:
“We try to hide religiously,” he says. “If anyone at Cerberus has his picture in the paper and a picture of his apartment, we will do more than fire that person. We will kill him. The jail sentence will be worth it.” There are a few nervous laughs.
Among many other holdings, Feinberg's Cerebus now owns or controls Chrysler Corporation, MCI, Albertsons, Mervyn's, GMAC, Bushmaster Firearms, Remington Arms, and is buying 6 TV stations from CBS.

Feinberg and Cerebus, by paying out big bucks, also seem to "own or control" quite a few GOP politicians. Former George W. Bush Treasury Secretary John W. Snow is Cerebus' Chairman. Dan Quayle is Cerebus "Chairman of Global Investments," and Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is a prominent client.

Republican Congressman Jerry Lewis voted to reverse himself, thus saving an $8.8 billion MCI defense contract for telecom giant MCI (a Cerebus-owned company). The change of vote came after Lewis received $110,000 in campaign contributions from Cerebus, through a PAC.

Talk about money well spent! As long as Lewis is smart enough to keep his trap shut.

This Cerberus?

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell
