I find this just a little nauseating:
The annual "Purity Ball" is a high point on the social calendar in Colorado Springs, the unofficial headquarters of America's evangelical movement and laboratory of sorts for church-made solutions to all manner of social scourges. For months, the girls and young women here have been trying on gowns and agonizing over footwear choices, counting the days until the big night. Now, as hotel staff rush about with dinner trays, the girls are filing into the Lake Terrace Ballroom in a gust of silk and taffeta, many of them resplendent in white gloves, and about a third of them crowned with rhinestone-studded tiaras. The event has the look of a prom, a wedding and a debutante ball rolled into one. But there's a twist that just might leave the uninitiated with a case of the creeps: on this night, the debutantes are dating their own dads. |

I've seen this thing before, if not here on SFN, then at Skepticality.
Just another reason for the teenager to get a nice present for her promise to be chaste, then slip behind dad's back to "get some"... I wonder how many chastity-vows get broken, knowing teenagers and hormones, and how badly I wanted to get laid when I was in the upper teens. |

Sexist, too, unless virginal boys dating their moms are invited.
Er, I suppose they should have their own Ball the next weekend. Or at least at a venue across town. A co-ed event would be far too charged up, for both the teens and their adult escorts. |

I do go on "dates" with my two daughters. I take each one out by themselves to dinner, movie or what ever she likes. I find one on one time with my children very rewarding, I think they like it as well. I also want them to see how a man should treat a woman when they get older so they will not settle for a honk in the driveway. I also took my older daughter to a Daddy-Daughter valentines dance the city put on last February. We both dressed up, went to Luby's then the dance. It was great fun. I do not see anything innapropriate about it.
It is good these dads are involved with their children. Do you think it is a good idea for 15 year olds to have sexual relationships? They are trying do discourage bad choices and the consequences they bring. There are secular father daughter dances going on all the time, why are not these nauseating to you Filthy? |

It's the ceremony of the thing. That ring passover almost smacks of engagement.
I too, have daughters, grown now, and as a single parent, I took them out often. Heh, now they take me out.
Our relationship has always been close, but it was never anything like that prom. That was all but indecent, in my opinion.

I do not like the expense and cerimony of the thing either. I also would not make my daughters take an oath of purity. It just needs to be taught and modeled and ther is no 100% sure way my or any daughters are not going to have sex before they are adults. But it should not be thought that it is inevitable. The parents need to be around to pick up the pieces when a young girl makes a wrong descision. |
