The human version of the gene FOXP2, the only known gene which is associated with human speech (and which has a different form in chimps) has reportedly been found in Neanderthal fossils. This discovery might push back the origins of human speech by as much as 100,000 years, to the common ancestor of Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis, some 300,000 years ago.
