Ditto, and belated congrats on the birth of the lovely Lysistrata!

It's been longer yet since you posted on this... We've missed you gal! Your posts have been too few and far apart the last year or so.

Also, any results, Mab? Are you OK?
The results came in the day before yesterday. Good news and bad news:
The bad news: polycystic kidney disease is confirmed on both kidneys, lots of cycts.
The good news: Doc said all the cycts looked small, and the blood-tests were excellent. No indication of failing kidneys.

He was sending a notice to kidney specialists, and they are going to get back to me eventually for an examination. But he said they would proabably just take regular blood tests to monitor function, as everything seems ok for now.

Also... hi! I'm not dead! And since I had no idea how to announce this grand fact, a post in the water cooler sounds suitable :)
We avait even more post from you now. Tell us how you're fairing in the new city...

Guilty as charged, I'm afraid. Alas.

That's good to hear, though cysts aren't fun, at all. Me, I've got a decent case of anemia (which is common in chronic illnesses like arthritis, but mine has been especially stubborn), so I spent xmas in a hospital, shooting iron up my veins. Very not fun, especially considering the bruises I left there with, and that I have to do it two more times - tomorrow and wednesday (I did yesterday, too).

The new city is OK, pretty, well, arid (it's semi-arid, actually: a savanna, or cerrado as we call it, but we're in the wet season right now which means daily rain). The work is awesome, the coworkers are lovely (and I've since had the opportunity to start postgrad in criminal law - paid by the court, which is even better), but otherwise, same old, same old. My sister had a baby, a lovely baby girl I plan to subtly educate in the ways of skepticism as she grows, but don't tell her parents that I've also bought my first apartment (with help from sis and mother), which I shall be paying for the next 15 years, oi vey. We'll move next year, after restorations.

Other than health problems, though, how are you, dear Mab? I missed you (and everyone else, too).

I'm really fine! We've got around 30cm of snow in my town. It's close to melting right now, but the weather-man promised -10°C tomorrow and -20°C on Wednesday. My holiday from work is until January 4th, so I'm basically doing nothing but reading forum, playing Guild Wars, and watching TV. Tomorrow I have an hour of massage mostly for relaxation.

It's been so long I don't recall if you were told I got married last year...

Mine too, actually - except I've been doing photoshop art, watching Dexter, going to the hospital (bleck), and checking the forums :)

You did! I saw the pics back in the day. How's the wife and life as a married man?

Her profile says she's a single female. She's either not completely committed to Skeptic Friends minutiae, or to her spouse. Which do you think it is?

You know, I don't even recall my wife registering here. What's her profile?

It's not your wife? Why are you messing around with someone that's not your wife?

Just kidding. I'm the one that is confused. My mistake. Congratulations!

Oh, but my wife knows I'm flirting with Siberia. The good thing is, she's cool with that.

So it was news to me tonight that Terry Pratchet's The Color of Magic was made into a made-for-TV movie, but then I stumbled across it on Netflix, available instantly or on DVD. It is, of course, better as a book, but the movie doesn't completely suck (at least, the first half hasn't).

Thanks for the heads-up! "The Color of Magic" is now my next Netflix selection. I should be watching it Tuesday.

I take it you don't do the "Watch Instantly" stuff, then? I do it for everything unless a film isn't available Instantly or I know that my wife would like to watch it. 'Cause I've gotten into the habit of working on my Web sites or doing other computer-type stuff (on the left half of my monitor) while watching movies (on the right half). I've seen 42 movies since January 1, plus a couple episodes of Heroes, plus a handful more movies that I quit on after a few minutes. I really should investigate a dual-monitor setup...

One of the suits where I work didn't know that he could "Watch Instantly" as many movies as he liked while also having DVDs at home. He thought it was a one-or-the-other deal. I got some brownie points for setting him straight on that one.

No, I wish I could use their "Instant" feature. I don't use that Netflix option because the sound was always screwed up whenever I've tried it. All I get is the video and the sound of an outboard motor.

Also, I've lost considerable ability to multi-task as a result of that stroke 6 years ago, so I do one thing at a time. (Not that I was ever especially good at doing that before the brain damage.)

Edit: With this one, Netflix fails to deliver the movie at all, and returns an error message:

I can't believe I missed this...

They also made Hogfather. It was even better.
And Susan was gorgeous, espcially when she transformed into SUSAN. Gave me goosebumps.

Rumour has it that "Going Postal" is next.
Haven't read that one yet.

Today I tasted one of the hottest pepper sauces ever made. It's called Mega Death Sauce and is primarily made of habanero peppers. I got some on my fingers and took a lick. I will attest that the burning sensation in my mouth gave me visions of eating molten lava straight out of a vulcano.
I had some on my spagetti bolognese, and had to vipe the sweat out of my forhead and scalp several times during the meal.

I've washed my hands 5 times since then, but I can still taste the capsaicin if I lick my fingers. Man this cauce was hot...
