A new mtDNA study suggests the first Asian immigrants to the new world stayed put for 15,000 years in the now-submerged Bering Land Strait area.
Maternal geneflow in and out of Beringia. This founding population of about 70 people stayed there long enough to accumulate several unique mutations not shared with the Asian populations they came from.
Then, suddenly these founders moved swiftly east and south, and in almost no time populated both North and South America, leaving little or no genetic differences between people in the various parts of the Americas. Some of the population also traveled back to Asia, and later more Asians came through Beringia again.
