What's even more depressing? It's effects apparently could be moderated if there was enough political will to do so.

Yet the report also concludes that, while some climate change is now inevitable, its worst effects could be avoided with straightforward measures at little cost if only governments would take action. It says that the job can be done by using "technologies that are either currently available or expected to be commercialised in coming decades". It could be done at a cost of slowing global growth by only a tenth of a percentage point a year, and might even increase it.

The missing element, virtually everyone agrees, is political will from governments. Next month they meet in Bali to start negotiations on a new treaty to replace the current provisions of the Kyoto Protocol, which run out in 2012.

China insists "with other key developing countries like India and South Africa" that the United States must move first to clean up. It points out that, because of the disparity in populations, every American is responsible for emitting much more of the gas than each Chinese. But the US refuses to join any new treaty unless China also accepts restrictions.

They go on to say that China's actually starting to do something, and they're hopeful that a change in the american administration will help, but meh.

Meanwhile, on a related note:

Heck, if there was enough Political Will, there would be Peace On Earth. <knowing chuckle> That said, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the political will to get around to fixing climate change. Afterall, these facts haven't changed:

#1. Change happens. The climate changes all the time. You can't change that so why fight it?

#2. Global Warming is just one cost of doing business. We can't turn our back on capitalism and all the wealth it's brought us just because it comes with a price. You really want to go back to the Dark Ages?

#3. Global Warming will certainly open all sorts of business opportunity. America should be preparing to take advantage of all the new goods and services consumers will need when the climate warms. And because it will harm poorer countries more than wealthy, US labor will likely have less low-cost competition in the near future. Why focus exclusively on the negative?

Isn't that what Social Darwinism is all about?

I reject this (I assume chaloobi does also) as a valid argument for doing anything on humanitarian grounds.

Hell, I reject all three of the arguments for various reasons.
#1) ...we CAN. So why don't we?
#2) ...doesn't have to set us back to the Dark Age. We're developing new technologies for fixing things. Not turning back the clock.

Global warming and acidification of the oceans will also do a mischief to the plants and animals living there...including those we use for food, and that produce our breathable air.

Funny how Soylent Green is the most accurate movie ever made about the future.

Yes, just deadpan sarcasm. People do think what I listed, however. Scary.
