I remember seeing a "life size" model of one of these creepy creatures in London 20 years ago, and even earlier, bits of fossil displayed at the Museum of Natural History in New York.
Fossil of Giant Sea Scorpion found.

Here's a little more on it. There's some argument as to whether this animal is an ancestor of our modern arachnids or another evolutionary dead end, and some smaller species went on to eventually come ashore and scare the bejabbers out of the arachnophobes.
Much is made out of the first amphibians to venture on to land, but the sea scorps were the real pioneers.
