Secularists Hear Republican Presidential Contenders

St. Louis, Missouri, February 10, 2008 (PPN) -- Seculars, people who strongly believe in the separation of Church and State, have become a political prize for American politicians.

The remaining GOP presidential candidates, front runner Sen. John McCain and Gov. Mike Huckabee, addressed the semi-annual convention of the non-partisan Secular Voters League today. A huge and fast growing movement in the United States, secularism has drawn increasing notice from politicians. Friday, Democratic Party candidates, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, addressed the convention. Today it was the turn of the GOP candidates.

Sen. McCain's performance raised a few eyebrows. The senator walked onto the stage dressed as Satan. It soon became clear that McCain considers secularism to be the same as Satanism. "America needs the help of its faithful Satanists in this hour of international strife and conflict," McCain told the stunned convention delegates. "Only the Great Satan can defeat the Islamic terrorists! Hail Lord Satan!" he concluded.

Gov. Huckabee gave a long and impassioned speech, emphasizing that he has always been a secularist and a "fundamentalist Darwinist" at heart. He called for the destruction of all neo-Darwinist textbooks and teaching only from the 1859 First Edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species. "This," said Huckabee as he held high a copy of the book, "is the only Authorized edition. It's the King James Version of Darwin."

John McCain's Devil costume and shouts of "Hail Satan!" demonstrated
a certain confusion about the concept of secularism. Mike Huckabee was
somewhat more effective with his over-sized "Darwin Fish" lapel pin.
