In 1968, Chairman Mao, reflecting upon China's relative backwardness in the comedic arts, launched a short-lived and largely unsuccessful remedial campaign called the "Great Pratfall." Leftist international supporters, including an 18-year-old John Candy, flocked to China to help the population learn modern Western Shtick.
