Hong Kong health officials on Tuesday warned would-be slimmers not to consume parasitic worms in an attempt to lose weight following adverts for products containing worm eggs.

A health department spokesperson said there was no scientific evidence that infestation with ascaris, a parasitic worm which lives in the intestine, was a way to lose weight.

He warned that worm infestations caused pain, vomiting and diarrhoea and could prove difficult to get rid of.

What is ascaris?

It is estimated that some 1.2 billion people are infected with A.lumbricoides.

Please don't somehow trick me into looking at those pictures when I get home. Please.

I have very few fears, but parasites is definitely one of them.

Yeah I'm skipping those pictures too. (I've already seen images of parasites: Dick Cheney for example.)

Lovely indeed! But then, I suppose you have to have had some experience with this sort of thing to truely appreciate the marvel of the parasites.

Parasitic worms are definatly not the way to go about losing weight because due to a high reproduction rate, they may soon all but take over (this case is an extreme one and is the story behind one of pleco's illustrations). These evolved with creatures that moved around out-of-doors a lot and subsisted on, to us, short rations, spreading eggs and even passing adults, unlike ourselves, who stay pretty much put and eat our fills 3 times a day. A much better way would be to get some exercise digging bait worms and going fishing without lunch.

Parasitic nematodes are very interesting. A bit gross, yes.

And seriously, I do not reccomend intentionally infecting yourself to lose weight. Go buy a kilo of methamphetamine, its probably safer.

Plus you get to lose your teeth, thus promoting weight loss.
