I was on the phone with a relative the other day talking about the primary, and to my shock (because he's a left-leaning college graduate) he casually said, "Barack Obama's a Muslim, right?" I explained that Barack is a church-going Christian whose mom and distant biological father are atheists and whose stepfather is a secular Muslim. My relative replied, "Huh. I heard somewhere that his family is connected to extremist Muslims." If college educated people so casually believe this stuff, maybe the Republicans will managed to keep the white house in 2008.

For those who don't know about this, here's the original emails spreading the false rumor that Obama is secretly an extremist Muslim and info debunking its claim:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_barack_obama_muslim.htm

And now to add insult to injury, some people are using Obama's refusal to wear an American flag pin during the Iraq War and one photo which claims he didn't put his hand on his heart while saying the Pledge of Allegiance to say Obama isn't patriotic. When the hell did patriotism equal unconditional support of government military actions? When the hell did patriotism become mindless conformity to certain, very specific rituals that most people do by rote? My brain hurts from trying to understand this nonsense.

Complete and utter fabrication.

The picture is when he visited Somalia as part of a diplomatic mission. Senators often wear the customary clothing of the host country.

The particular picture was released from the Hilary Clinton Campaign.

And so help me Ra, if you even mention that Louis Farrakhan came out endorsing Obama (which he has) as evidence that the poor practicing Christian is actually a closet Muslim, I'll scream.

Good catch emsby. Sure, nobody ever sounded better running screaming into a crowded market. But experience matters. It just does.

H. Humbert.....

Look, Hummer, I'm just an ancient alliterative, Alzheimic, confused, consonantal, codger purveying purple prose, but please tell me that you posted this with your sharp tongue penetrating your cheek!
False rumor? Then explain this:

Valiant Dancer correctly explained.....
Complete and utter fabrication.

.....which leads me to believe that at least one other member here thought you might possibly be serious! You cannot be serious about portraying Obama as a Muslim? Can you?

I would think the link I provided would have cleared up any doubts on my position on this topic. Valiant Dancer gave a good summary of the information to be found there.

I don't know what it is, but Hillary's campaign seems to draw inspiration from this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demagogue

If they've missed anything mentioned on this page I expect them to fill in the holes within a week or two. For a populist example, check out her answer to the mortgage default problem. Her plan is to use my tax money to ensure people that never should have been given loans can keep the homes they really couldn't afford. And lets not get into how this bails out people that were "flipping" properties. While I continue to rent because I was smart enough to know better.

Oh, and doesn't that loaded question fallacy ring any bells...or maybe a phone?
