I rarely repeat posts between boards, but this is what I wrote on the JREF forums:
In his own peculiar way, I honestly think EGG did a great deal for us, even if he may not have known it. He turned horror into fun, nightmares into entertainment, and weakened its iron grip on us, and showed us the possibility of stepping outside our own skins, teaching us that other ways are not necessarily Wrong ways.
A salute to you, EGG. But you shoulda known better than to let that killer DM trick you into opening that cursed scroll...
Even if all one had to say was that he put a smile on some faces...that's a legacy I'd take in a heartbeat.
Farewell and well met. |

From the CNN note:Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said. | How much fun would that have been? Question is, did he still use 1e or what? |

Something interesting; it seems that he "found christ" just before he died.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

I was part of a group of war game players back in the mid-seventies. I was the oldest, but nearly all the others are dead now. We had all bought the three shitty little original D&D manuals, and were mystified by the utter unplayability of the game based upon those inscrutable rules.
After a few months, we attended a war gamers' convention, and were fortunate enough to find a dungeon master there who ran us through some play, and showed us what the concepts were. As published material, the original manuals were useless, without someone who had themselves learned to play through human interaction.
Gary made many enemies through his greed and sharp business practices, no doubt about that. But his contributions in partly creating this new type of game, along with Dave Arneson and others, was and is a significant cultural breakthrough which resounds to this day in computer games, cinema, etc.
I don't mind Gary's deathbed "finding Christ." BFD. That means nothing, to Gygax, or to anyone else. (Jesus is really good at hiding from people, that rascal!)
