Someone's already defaced the Wiki entry for Spitzer. It may not last long, but here's what I cut-and-pasted: Eliot Laurence Spitzer (born June 10, 1959) is an American lawyer, politician and the current Governor of New York. Spitzer was elected governor in the November 2006 election. He is the former New York State Attorney General, a member of the Democratic Party, a backstabbing man-whore, who hired a prostitute, and is married to Silda Wall Spitzer, the founder and chair of Children for Children, a non-profit organization. | [My emphasis.]
Hey, finally a Democrat doing the naughty! But heterosex, not that Gay Old Poltroon stuff. Here's the CNN story.
The following photo just cries out, "I'll kill him" and, "I'm a dead man."
Gov. Eliot Spitzer, with his wife by his side, apologizes to his family and to the public.

I'm still unclear as to whether he hired prostitutes or was some sort of pimp. Help me out here.
Incidentally, I recently read a Vanity Fair article that said he was basically hated in Albany. He apparently has a horrible temper, is given to violent cursing fits, and has completely alienated his staff and others close to him. So apparently, he's a real winner. |

Well, I hope he was a client. That was the impression I got, that his name came up as a client as part of some investigation.
He should resign anyway, as he has a public reputation for being tough on this sort of crime.

I got the same impression, but H. Humbert and I were discussing this and he said he got the impression he was somehow involved in the management of the prostitution ring. Weird. They're certainly not giving out any details freely. And yeah, you're right... he was supposed to be a sort of Guiliani-esque, "tough on organized crime" type of a guy. Guess that didn't really work out. |

| From the NY Times, it sounds like he took a NY hooker with him to DC for some meeting:The man described as Client 9 in the affidavit arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, Emperors Club VIP, on the night of Feb. 13. Mr. Spitzer traveled to Washington that evening, according to a person told of his travel arrangements.
The affidavit says that Client 9 met with the woman in hotel room 871 but does not identify the hotel. Mr. Spitzer stayed at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on Feb. 13, according to a source who was told of his travel arrangements. Room 871 at the Mayflower Hotel that evening was registered under the name George Fox.
The law enforcement official said that several people running the prostitution ring knew Mr. Spitzer by the name of George Fox, though a few of the prostitutes came to realize he was the governor of New York.
Mr. Fox is a friend and donor to Mr. Spitzer. Asked in a telephone interview Monday whether he accompanied Mr. Spitzer to Washington on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14, Mr. Fox responded: "Why would you think that? I did not.” |

I was just confused because the blurb I read kept using the phrase "involved in a prostitution ring," which made it sound like he was more than a client. I mean, if the guy bought a bag of weed, I doubt the headline would be "NY Governor involved in drug cartel." Maybe that's just me, but I thought they were trying to imply greater "involvement" than just using the service.

Pimping should be illegal, but prostitution is fine, if properly regulated. Spitzer, on the other hand, has totally screwed up. He'll have to find another job, I think. |

Actually, his history as AG is one of harsh prosecution vs prostitution.
What he did is, in that light, very hypocritical.
As to the seriousness of the crime? I agree generally. He could be in pretty serious trouble though, because he crossed a state line while commiting a crime. If they bring charges for that he could see jail time.

Democrat or not, I don't see any way to defend this hypocrite, nor wish to. He'd been a big-time prosecutor of prostitution. Public perception naturally has to wonder if he's protected this prostitution ring while smacking down their competition. Naw, this dude's finished, and should resign at once, unless he's innocent.
