I recently discovered that two close friends of mine have turned vegan. Did they come to this decision based on a long, thoughtful inspection of a variety of serious issues? No. They want to be skinny and they read a diet book. Specifically, they read "Skinny Bitch."

Curious, I went to the book store and read it. I didn't buy it, and I'm glad. The book was full of half-truths barely supported claims. The book also makes no bones about the fact that it is deliberately attracting readers who desperately want to have the body of a runway model, and while it claims to be really promoting good health, it reads more like a self-righteous manifesto for extremist animal rights activists.

I found this review, which I agree with mostly.

Dieters hoping the authors of "Skinny Bitch" have more nutritional savvy than Posh might be more comforted by the jacket photo of Freedman and Barnouin looking lean, rather than their food science credentials. Barnouin left her modeling career to get a degree in holistic nutrition at what the New York Times called, in deadpan, an "unaccredited school for alternative health," and Freedman, a former modeling agent, describes herself as a "self-taught know-it-all" in her bio.

And I'll probably make more specific criticism of the book later when I have time.

Anyone else read it?

Wouldn't bother reading it. There are some things that I am dogmatic about, and the fallacy of vegetarianism/veganism is one of them. People can live that way if they wish, but I don't let them preach to me about it.
