Kottayam, India (AHN) - Almost 50 people reportedly lost their sight after staring at the sky in hopes of catching a glimpse of the rumored image of the Virgin Mary.
Officials of India's Kottayam district reported a total of 48 individuals experiencing the condition, after medical examinations determined that their retinas were burned from staring at the sun. The cases had reportedly been constantly coming in since Friday last week.
According to the UPI, the victims were adamantly insistent upon seeing an image of Mary that allegedly appeared above the house of a former hotel owner in Erumeli.
Despite several warnings from city and church officials regarding the dangers of looking at the sky, thereby exposing the eyes to the harsh rays of the sun, pious individuals continued to go to and try to see the alleged image.

Damn... What is it with people that they are willing to risk their health and their livelihoods with it, on the minute chance of seeing something that is so vauge & ephemeral that only a drugged imagination could pick it out.
Now, I have little problem with folks swooning over a gnarled stump or a partly-gnawed, grilled cheese sandwich -- hell, that's funny -- but this is far beyond the pall. Indeed, in a way it reminds me of the Flagellents because you and I know that should any of these doofuses regain any part of their sight, they'll be right back out there, staring at sweet, bright nothing.

On a related matter, Every Good Friday in the Philippines, since 1962, can be found this happy, little celebration......
.... where vendors sell beer & fixin's & stuff to tourists, and everybody has just a wonderful time and religious experience, whilst various flagellates flog themselves into an abattoir's leftovers around crucified and arguably certifiable lunatics.
And all the authorities have to say about it is advice on tetanus shots and scourge hygiene. And that's good; at least they're paying attention. It's also good because this nonsense is religious freedom at it's epitome and none of the government's damned business so long as they don't flog the bystanders or otherwise create a public health problem.
But should it be? Should the government step in and put a stop to it or force it to become merely symbolic -- no nails and soft scourges without bits of sharp metal braided into them?
I think, no. I think it would be better to remain a sanguinary, public circus rather than go underground where it could evolve into something altogether different and a lot nastier, ultra-religious psychopaths being what they are.

It's really the Virgin Mary's fault - she should take off the bling-bling before appearing.
As to the wanna-be Jesuseses....what a bunch of pussies! No crown of thorns, and I'm gonna bet no one is sticking them in the side with a spear. What are they afraid of, death? If I were god (and prove I'm not?), I would be sorely disappointed by these cowards. |

This typo caught my eye.
