Chippewa.....
Amazing, seventeen years before Edison, although he also messed around with phonautographs before inventing the phonograph.
Here are the words to the old French folk song, not to be confused with the much more famous Clair de Lune by Claude DeBussy, written much later (1907). DeBussy did not provide a lyric for his beautiful piano interpretation of a poem by Paul Verlaine which is the third movement of his Suite Bergamasque
Under the moonlight, My friend Pierrot Lend me your pen, So I could write a word My candle is out, I've no more light Open your door for me, For God's sake. Under the moonlight, Pierrot replied, I've no pen, I'm in my bed. Go next door, I believe they're in, For in the kitchen, Someone lit a match. Under the moonlight, Nice Lubin Knocks at the brunette's door, She suddenly replies "Who's knocking this way", He says in his turn "Open your door, for the God of Love." Under the moonlight, Little can be seen The pen was looked for, Fire was looked for Searching this way, I don't know what was found But I do know that the door, On them was shut down.

Years ago I took a class in acoustics (while getting my Masters degree in music.) I recall the professor mentioning that sound recording was first theorized by a French inventor who "ran some tests as proofs" and left it at that. Edison, being much more of an applied science guy, built a working model of his sound recorder that had practical applications. The French experiment recorded sound waves on smoke stains.
By the way - Debussy is one word, not "DeBussy". As you noted his Clair de Lune doesn't use the folksong words or melody but as you said was inspired by a poem. The folksong is unrelated.

Chippewa what is your (primary) instrument? I have never formally studied music, but have had a lifelong love of classical and classical jazz, (with a record library ranging from 30's shellac, to 50's vinyl LP's, to 45's, to tapes of various sorts, to CD's and now.....what to do?) of several thousand recordings. I play a little piano, some of it good enough for folks with an untrained ear to enjoy!
You obviously are trained and knowledgeable in the classical art form, do you perhaps enjoy and play classical jazz, too (maybe like André Previn?) |

I'm not a jazz pianist (or conductor) like the great Andre Previn - neither as famous or wealthy. I do however compose music and use the piano more as a writer uses a typewriter (i.e. these days computer) to write music on. My Roland electronic keyboard was recently plugged into a MacBook Pro OSX with MOTU Symphonic Instrument installed.
I taught advanced orchestration as a faculty associate at the Arizona State University School of Music for several years. I studied with American symphonic composers - Grant Fletcher, Ronald LoPresti, Vincent Persichetti. I have one work recently recorded on CD, a Quintet for Oboe and Strings. For orchestra I have composed one symphony, a viola concerto and a ballet score titled "Ojibwa" among other works. I'm also a painter and graphic artist represented by several galleries over the years and have painted commissioned works some of which are in private collections. I paint abstracts, landscapes, portraits, pen & inks and aviation art, and have a website for my art but its retail and I'll have to check with the mods if we're allowed to link there. If so I'll link it. |

I heard it on NPR. Apparently the recording was intended to be appreciated visually, not played back. Edison rules. |

Peter.....
Why not link your art website here? Marf advertises hers!
I would like to see some of your work to add to my eclectic collection. If you don't care to post a link here, send me one in a PM.
I asked....
Chippewa what is your (primary) instrument? |
You failed to mention that you ....have performed over 2000 concerts with the Westwood Wind Quintet, which he founded in 1959. He has been first oboe with the San Diego Symphony, the Roger Wagner Chorale Orchestra, the California Chamber Symphony the Los Angeles and San Francisco Ballet Orchestras, and performed frequently with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the major film studio orchestras.
| Your talent is obviously prodigious; your modesty is charming, and an oasis in an Turkish desert overblown with the abrasive sand of young ego!
I have been called patronizing, Chippewa, but I actually am a patron!
I have ordered your CD723: RENDEZVOUS AND DREAMS. Peter Christ, Oboe with the Crystal Chamber Soloists. The oboe is an instrument of haunting tone and inflection, one for which I would gladly exchange my left leg in return for a mastery of! A little late to take it up at 79, however, and the leg is worth less every day! |

Thanks for ordering the album! I hope you enjoy the quintet I wrote. I'm one of four composers on the album. I'm not Peter Christ but he is a terrific oboist and it was fun to compose a piece for him. My website is almost ready but I have to complete the PayPal setup. Should be up by the weekend and I'll link to it. |

Chippewa.....
Then you must be Gregory La Traille, Quintet (oboe & string quartet). Does this piece describe you?Greg La Traille, (b. 1951), is an American composer and visual artist. He has been drawing and painting since childhood. Due to a youthful heart problem which prevented participation in sports, the young La Traille took up art, including model building and sculpture. An early interest in music was perked by his father's love of Stravinsky and jazz and his mother's love of Broadway musicals. LaTraille began piano lessons at an early age and while still in high school had composed piano music, chamber music and orchestral works including a viola concerto and a four movement symphony. While at Arizona State University, he studied with composers Ronald Lo Presti and Grant Fletcher as well as occasional private composition lessons with the visiting Vincent Persichetti, who spoke highly of La Traille's concertos. | And much, much, more! Are you an oboist also? Your bio doesn't say!
I really love the voice of the instrument! Several of my favorite recordings are Vaughan Williams, Concerto for Oboe and Strings, Saint-Saens, Sonata for Oboe and Piano, and Samuel Barber's Canzonetta.
I am something of a jazz fanatic, but the only jazzman I know of with an oboe repertoire is the jazz flautist Yusef Lateef.
Beautiful work, Greg! |

At first they said the earliest was Edison, now they move the date back even further. I guess that invalidates the whole Theory of Evolution of Recording, doesn't it?
